Former HGTV hopefuls claim other networks plan to pursue a television deal with them, post homophobic scandal.
David and Jason Benham were dropped from an HGTV show tentatively called “Flip it Forward.” The pair, sons of conservative activist Flip Benham, now claim that they are being pursued by other television networks for a new show.
The Benham’s release from HGTV seems to have been spurned by the publication of their anti-gay views. The political watch group Right Wing Watch published a post citing how David Benham is an “anti-gay, anti-choice extremist” for leading a prayer rally in 2012 outside of the Democratic National Convention.
Additionally, other reports describe David Benham’s supposed anti-gay comments and his support for a ban on same-sex marriages in North Carolina’s state constitution, also known as Amendment One.
HGTV did not comment directly on how their decision to drop the upcoming Benham brothers correlated to the information posted on the Right Wing Watch site, even though they dropped the show only a few days after it’s publication.
The Benham brothers believe that they were dropped by HGTV directly from the negative media attention. Even though HGTV hasn’t said this, its timeliness seems to support this sentiment.
This incident with the Benham brothers supports a trend where networks take a rather silent, but effective, stance against discrimination. HGTV, the Food Network, ABC, A&E, and others have all dropped programming based on discriminatory beliefs and comments from TV programming stars.
