Report: $15,000 license plate fee waived when you buy a Tesla in China

Shanghai is one of four Chinese cities that limit car purchases by placing quotas on registrations.

According to a report from ValueWalk, buying a Tesla Model S in China will save you $15,000 on a license plate.

In Tesla’s most recent earnings call, the company said that the government of Shanghai has decided to waive the groundbreaking car from license plate auctions that can frequently cost wannabe drivers up to $15,000.

Bloomberg News reports that the cost of a license plate at the Shanghai license plate auction can often be more than the car itself, meaning that many residents can afford a car but no the license plate that is needed to drive it.

“Whenever there’s a restriction of new car purchases through the quota system, there is always a big impact on lower-price cars like the ones we make,” Lawrence Ang, executive director of Geely Automobile Holdings, told Bloomberg News.

Making the environmentally friendly Tesla slightly more affordable by waiving the license plate auction is one way for China to combat its pollution problem.
