How an 'Angry Inch' earned this frat boy hero a Tony nomination
On the cover of the latest Rolling Stone, comedian, actor, host extraordinaire Neil Patrick Harris dons his birthday suit, baring all, except a strategically placed top hat, to showcase his latest unveiling of superb theatrical talent: Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
After playing the über macho Barney Stinson on ABC’s hit show How I Met Your Mother for nine years, what better way to celebrate its completion by baring it all as a transsexual in the Broadway rendition of Hedwig and the Angry Inch?!
They’ve said it before; it can be said again: Doogie Howser sure has grown up. Since he came out publicly as a gay man, Harris has explained that his relationship with himself and the public has changed in many ways; however, coming out to his family proved much more difficult than coming out to the public.
Rolling Stone quotes Harris as saying, “Once all the cards were on the table, I got more opportunities than ever. Some actors don’t get hired because you can’t look into their soul and see what they’re like, because they’re kept guarded.”
Neil doesn’t take to the guarded approach. Refined acting, that’s another thing.
“I didn’t think he could pull off the femininity of [the role],” says Burtka, Neil’s fiancé. “This is such a stretch for him. In his day-to-day, he’s not a very feminine guy.”
Harris, who normally presents himself as a generally balanced masculine guy, says, “I have always been highly aware of how I was presenting myself. Which, now that I’m playing overtly feminine and loving it, is kind of a stupid concern.”
Neil Patrick Harris and his scantily clad cover hit the newsstands on Friday.
So whether you’re aBarney Stinson fan or a Harold and Kumar fan, you might want to hang on to this cover for your collection, or to get an autographed copy at the upcoming Broadway show.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been nominated for an impressive eight Tony nominations.
Entertainment Weekly shares that the recent Tony nominee will be baring his soul and his svelte bod every night in the hit Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, now playing at the Belasco Theatre!
