Constantine, a new television movie based on Hellblazer from DC Comics, has been picked up by NBC, confirms Entertainment Weekly.

The new supernatural venture stars Matt Ryan of Criminal Minds fame as John Constantine, a former demon-hunter now police detective who battles the darker elements of Earth.

“Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit,” reads the official description from NBC, “he fights the good fight — or at least he did.”

The series also features actress Lucy Griffiths of True Blood as Liv, a daughter of Constantine’s friend who demons target.

Harold Perrineau from Sons of Anarchy, and Charles Halford of True Detective round out the cast.

David S. Goyer acts as executive producer. Previous credits include Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises.

In addition, NBC ordered another drama Mysteries of Laura about another police detective. Will & Grace‘s Debra Messing stars as NYPD homicide detective Laura Diamond who balances her demanding day job with her equally demanding family life.

“For Laura, every day is a high-wire balancing act,” notes NBC’s official description.

“Between cleaning up after her boys and cleaning up the streets, she’d be the first to admit she has her ‘hot mess’ moments in this hilariously authentic look at what it really means to be a ‘working mom’ today,” continues the description.

NBC also greenlighted A-to-Z, the comedic story of a mis-matched couple who make it work. Ben Feldman of Mad Men and Cristin Milioti of How I Met Your Mother play the lovebirds. Rashinda Jones of Parks and Recreation fame serves as executive producer.

The network inked the deal Thursday.
