Notorious 'Party Monster' finally released from jail

His reign of the New York night life scene ended violently in murder

Michael Alig, 47, the notorious club kid of ‘Party Monster’ fame, once convicted of murdering and dismembering his roommate, has been released from jail. The former New York club promoter, portrayed by Macaulay Culkin in the 2003 movie ‘Party Monster’ served 17 years in prison for the brutal murder of his roommate, Andrew “Angel” Menendez, a drug dealer with a complicated past.

According to The Independent, Alig poured bleach into the mouth of Menendez before dismembering his body with knives and then disposing of his corpse in the Hudson River. The Huffington Post shared that Alig officially pled guilty to manslaughter in 1997.

Before his life behind bars, Michael Alig was best known as a club kid who orchestrated some of the most lavish, extravagant parties of the early nineties. The self-professed “King of the Club Kids” was described as having an almost “cultish rise to international fame, particularly in London,” where Alig brought out all the stops for his theatrical displays of tenacious festive ferocity. Wild themes, which included outlandish costumes, invoked a sense of otherworldly fantasy and retreat from reality.

Unfortunately, Alig’s escapades led him to the drug-fueled murder, which eventually landed him in jail for almost two decades.

The Huffington Post describes the event as having a catastrophic effect on the New York City club scene. “Alig effectively destroyed nightlife for many years,” Village Voice reporter Michael Musto told Paper magazine in April. “The killing happened during the Rudolph Giuliani era, when nightlife was portrayed [by the Mayor] as evil. It became uncool for many years to go out in costume in any way.”

Since his release, Alig has managed to stay out of trouble, just barely. In his first tweet since freedom, he writes: “Just narrowly escaped being re arrested for having my release filmed but we’re ok and in our way to nyc! #narrowescape” The tweet was “favorite” almost 300 times and retweeted about half that many times.

Alig has remained anything but silent, since his incarceration began in 1997. He released a dance single from jail in 2001 and took part in weekly podcasts in conversation with James St James via prison phone.

James St James, Alig’s best friend and affectionately described “frenemy” has been in communication with Alig, since he became imprisoned. Michael Alig has also written a book titled Aligula, in reference to the sex-crazed torturous Roman emperor Caligula.

On May 2, Alig tweeted “So overwhelmed: A 15-person van filled with friends, writers, photogs, film crews & WOW will pick me up from prison on Monday. #gulp.”

Whatever pool Alig decides to jump into next, is sure to feel the ripple effect of “The King of the Club Kids.”
