Countries stricken with natural disasters and poverty remain at the bottom of the list.
A recently released Save the Children report ranks the best and worst places to be a mother. The U.S. dropped to 31st, while countries that have been affected by conflict and natural disaster fall to last.
The 15th annual “State of the World’s Mothers” report was released on May 5, 2014, revealing the best and most difficult places to be a mother.
Finland earned the top spot on the report’s 2014 Mother’s Index. Somalia, which has been plagued by natural disasters and armed conflict, is at the bottom of the list. The U.S. slipped to number 31 out of 178 countries, after having ranked in the top five 15 years ago. The country is 13 places below its neighboring country, Canada.
Carolyn Miles, president and CEO of Save the Children, said in a statement, “In the U.S., the lifetime risk of maternal death has risen more than 50 percent since we launched our first report in 2000 – from 1 in 3,700 to 1 in 2,400.” She continued, “Today, an American woman faces the same lifetime risk of maternal death as a woman in Iran or Romania.”
Miles notes that over the past decade, the U.S. has made mediocre progress in saving children’s lives, with a reduced death for children under the age of five by around 15 percent.
Countries stricken with natural disasters and poverty remain at the bottom of the list. Miles said in a statement, “…when disaster strikes, whether it’s a war in Syria, a tornado in Oklahoma or a typhoon in the Philippines, women and children are often at the greatest risk – up to 14 times more likely to die than men. Fortunately, our evidence also shows we can save and dramatically improve the lives of mothers and children, even in the most challenging places to live, if we invest in the services they need.”
