Investigator: Circus accident caused by failed D-ring

What specifically caused the D-ring to fail is still under investigation.

According to a report from CNN, a failed D-ring caused the circus accident that injured 11 performers during a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show in Providence, Rhode Island, over the weekend.

“It was a single piece of equipment that failed,” Paul Doughty, the lead investigator for the Providence Fire Department, told reporters.

The Boston Globe reports that as a result of the finding the Ringling Bros. circus will replace all metal clamps utilized in its shows before reopening.

In the meantime, what specifically caused the D-ring to fail is still under investigation, according to Doughty. The D-ring was part of a rig that lifts performers by their hair into the air high above the audience. When the D-ring, also known as a caribiner, failed Sunday it sent eight circus acrobats plummeting 20 feet to the ground, injuring them and three others.
