Samsung ordered to pay $119 million to Apple in patent case

The battle between Apple and Samsung continues.

According to a report from Reuters, a United States jury issued an order that will require Samsung to pay roughly $120 million to Apple in patent infringement fees. While the verdict seems like a victory for Apple, the amount of $120 million is actually significantly less than the California-based electronics company was hoping for.

For several years now, Apple and Samsung have been doing battle in courts around the world. In 2012, Apple won a big trial in the United States District Court of San Jose, California, earning a payment of approximately $930 million from Samsung for various copyright and patent infringements. At the time, Apple had requested an injunction that would have prevented Samsung from selling its phones in the United States, but the request was not met.

This time around, Apple and Samsung were back in the federal courtrooms of San Jose and Apple was hoping for another big verdict from Samsung (to the tune of $2 billion), this time for the latter’s infringement of the iPhone’s universal search feature. Jurors found that Samsung had infringed upon two different Apple patents, but only delivered a verdict requiring the South Korean company to pay about six percent of Apple’s requested figure.

In other words, while this particular court case was a victory for Apple on paper, it may not have caused much celebrating in the company’s Cupertino, California offices. On the contrary, many legal experts estimate that the verdict will, at best, cover the cost of the litigation.

Meanwhile, while Apple gets over the disappointing monetary side of the court verdict, the company is hoping once again that its request for a sales injunction against Samsung will be met. However, since the court was clearly even less impressed with Apple’s arguments this time around, such a ban is a long shot at best.
