Cobain's "lawful shredded wife" is indeed the woman who wrote the note.
Last week CBS News published a handwritten note with mock wedding vows found in Kurt Cobain’s wallet at the time of his 1994 suicide.
“Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawful shredded wife…” reads the note, “even when she’s a b—h with zits and siphoning all (your) money for doping and whoring…”
Since Cobain’s body was discovered April 8, 1994, many have theorized that Love played a more sinister role in her husband’s death.
The recent discovery led many to speculate on the late Nirvana frontman’s possibly negative feelings toward his wife at the time, Courtney Love.
For many, the note lent more legitimacy to this theory.
However, Cobain’s biographer Charles R. Cross dismisses these claims to the Huffington Post.
“Early in their relationship, they wrote notes like that to each other constantly,” said Cross. “The handwriting is absolutely Courtney’s.”
“The note was promoted as Kurt mocking their wedding vows three years after they were married. It just doesn’t make any sense,” added Cross, who has penned several books about Cobain, including the biography Heavier Than Heaven.
In addition, Cross said that Love emailed him to clarify that she had actually written the note to Cobain in 1991.
CBS News published the image after filing a request for the public record, as it was part of the investigation into the singer’s death. A Seattle detective who reviewed the case file and evidence earlier this year concluded once again that no foul play was involved.
Love was married to Cobain from 1992 until his death. He left behind a daughter with Love, Frances Bean, who was born in 1992.
This year Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sales for Nirvana’s albums totaled $4.4 million in 2013, according to the Inquisitor. The same website places the late singer’s estate worth at $450 million.
