The national survey showed that nearly seven out of 10 Americans are likely to agree with the policy.
According to a national survey, women, blacks, and Hispanics are more likely to agree with Obamacare’s contraceptive coverage mandate, which is being challenged in the Supreme Court. Over two-thirds of Americans support mandated coverage of birth control medications.
The national survey, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan Health System, showed that nearly seven out of 10 Americans are likely to agree with the policy.
The findings, which appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association, show that women, blacks, Hispanics, and parents with children under 18 who live at home, as well as adults with private or public insurance, were far more likely to agree with universal support of birth control medications.
Survey participants from every U.S. state and the District of Columbia were surveyed regarding insurance coverage for many health services, such as mammograms, colonoscopies, dental care, vaccines, mental health services, high cholesterol and diabetes screenings, and birth control medications.
Dr. Michelle Moniz, lead study author and researcher at the University of Michigan Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation clinical scholar, said in the official press release, “There is an ongoing national debate about contraceptive coverage requirements in private health plans in the U.S.” She continued, “Our study found that 69 percent of U.S. adults support requiring coverage of birth control in health plans. This indicates that the majority view in the United States is that coverage for contraceptives should be required.”
Mandated coverage support was higher than it was for other medical services that Moniz and colleagues asked the participants about. For example, 85 percent of the public supported required coverage for mammograms and colonoscopies, with 84 percent for recommended vaccinations and 82 percent for high cholesterol and diabetes screening tests, followed by 77 percent for mental health care and 75 percent for dental care.
