A volcanic eruption in Indonesia has claimed more than 15 lives.
Fifteen people are confirmed dead after Mount Sinabung erupted, according to CNN. Within minutes of the eruption, a cloud of smoke, an estimated 700 degrees, raced down the slope of the mountain.
The Jarkata Post stated this was the first time the volcano’s eruption have resulted in any deaths.
The victims and at least three others who were injured, were found in Sukameriah, a village close to the crater of the volcano, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho a spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency told CNN.
Rescue crews are expected to begin recovery efforts Sunday.
Mount Sinabung has been erupting more frequently in recent years. According to the Jarkata Post, the most recent eruption forced villagers from 16 villages to be temporarily relocated for safety reasons. These evacuations have left around 30,000 people in emergency camps until the area is cleared.
