Universal's cop comedy 'Ride Along' cruised to another win at the box office while 'I, Frankenstein' struggled on its debut weekend, taking the sixth spot.
The weekend box office proved to be another win for Ride Along, the comedy starring Ice Cube and comedian Kevin Hart. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Universal film pulled in $21.2 million. This was down 49% from the $48.6 million that the cop comedy raked in last weekend, putting the film’s total revenue at $75.4 million. Ride Along‘s release last weekend marked the largest opening for a January debut, according to AceShowBiz, and cost about $25 million to produce.
Universal also claimed the No. 2 spot at the box office with its war feature Lone Survivor bringing in $12.6 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film is based on a true story about four Navy Seals in Afghanistan, and stars an ensemble cast lead by Pain & Gain star Mark Wahlberg. According to AceShowBiz, the film has brought in $93.6 million in total, and it is expected to easily get to $100 million. Lone Survivor grabbed second place at the box office at its debut last week as well.
Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment’s film I, Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart, proved to have a less than stellar debut this weekend, placing sixth in the box office rankings and bringing in just $8.3 million. The film also stars Underworld actor Bill Nighy, but only received a B CinemaScore and catered more to a male audience, according to the Hollywood Reporter. I, Frankenstein took the classic character, the Frankenstein monster, from author Mary Shelley’s book and attempted to reinvent him as an action hero. While the 3-D fantasy movie flopped in the United States, the film did only marginally better overseas, where its revenue was a total of $13 million. The film’s estimated budget is at a whopping $65 million. Lakeshore Entertainment financed the film, while Lionsgate distributed it.
Nut Job, Open Road’s animated film brought in $12.3 million on its second weekend and took the third spot behind Lone Survivor. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Open Road Films has already commissioned a sequel.
Disney’s 2013 animated film Frozen still brought in more money than I, Frankenstein on its debut weekend, bringing in $9 million during its 10th week, passing the $800 million mark, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and nabbing the 4th spot at the box office. At this point, it is the second original animated film of all time behind Finding Nemo. A sing-along version of Frozen will be debuting at the end of this month on January 31st.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit starring Chris Pine brought in $8.8 million during its second week. It was down 43% from its debut weekend, and took the fifth spot. It has grossed a total of $30.2 million so far.
