Leo's first time on SNL
Believe it or not, Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the biggest movie stars in the world, has never hosted or even visited Saturday Night Live. Until last night.
Last night, Leonardo DiCaprio got as close as he’s ever been to presiding over the main stage when he joined host and Wolf of Wall Street co-star Jonah Hill, who was hosting SNL for the third time, for his opening monologue.
Entertainment Weekly reports that lots of people were speculating if Hill’s Wolf of Wall Street costar would show up to help Jonah out, but that it was an exciting, but highly unlikely prospect. And then, it happened.
“It was more than just an unexpected A-list celebrity cameo, it was a Saturday Night Live moment,” Entertainment Weekly writes.
Leo DiCaprio or “Le(e)” as Jonah affectionately referred to him in mock bromance flirtation, showed up with his St. Barth’s golden tan and goateed boyish grin to assist his co-star in another turn as host on the longstanding late night show. Leo did not participate in any full-length sketches; he did, however, participate in an epic opening monologue.
Jonah began backpedaling sheepishly, after taking questions from the audience and slightly calling his famous co-star a “big shot” until Leo, in all his “Leo-ness,” appeared. It was then that we got to see Jonah’s, at least Jonah in character’s, true colors. He immediately softened and kowtowed to the über famous superstar that is Leo DiCaprio and began interacting with him in a way that we might only dream about bearing witness to, had we been on set with the two of them.
After seeing the way that Leo fondly mentors Jonah in a big brother that’ll take you to the casino kinda way, Jonah whispered, “Can we do the thing we always did?” Leo looks. Jonah repeats, “You know, the thing we would do every day, the thing that would make me feel safe?” Leo acknowledges what he has said and comes in for what looks like a “trust fall.” Jonah holds his arms out like Rose on the front of the Titanic, an infamous pose that has become well-known to the world as one of the most emblematic moments in recent cinematic history. And then, Leo does it. He grabs Jonah close and they are on the front of the Titanic, at the edge of the ship. He’s the King of the World!
We see why Jonah agreed to do The Wolf of Wall Street for scale.
Working with this class act high-caliber co-star is like living in a dream.
