It took her a long time to hit rock bottom.
Following her stint in rehab for alcoholism, journalist Elizabeth Vargas returned to TV on Friday.
“I am. I am an alcoholic,” Vargas said in an interview with Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos. “It took me a long time to admit that to myself,” she added. “It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am.”
According to Vargas, her husband Marc Cohn told her to go to rehab, saying “you have a problem,” but the journalist told Stephanopoulos that she finally agreed to seek help after she showed up to work “in no shape” to conduct an interview.
It took her a long time to hit rock bottom, but Vargas says there were signs from the beginning that she had a problem with alcohol.
“I should’ve realized it was a problem way back when Zachary, my oldest son, was born. And he used to call my nightly glass of wine ‘mommy’s juice.’ You know, and I thought that was hysterical. It didn’t occur to me that that was a problem.”
AceShowbiz reports that Vargas checked herself into rehab in early November for alcohol addiction and finished her treatment later that month. Friday marked Vargas’ official return to 20/20.
