U2 will debut new free song during Super Bowl ad

Irish rock band U2 will be debuting a new song off their upcoming album during a Super Bowl ad Sunday, February 2nd.

On Super Bowl Sunday, U2 will premiere their new song “Invisible” as part of a commercial they will star in from (RED) and co-sponsor Bank of America, according to Billboard.  (RED) was founded by U2 lead singer Bono and activist Bobby Shriver in 2006 to help fight against AIDS, and since then (RED) has generated about $240 million for the Global Fund.  Bank of America’s funding, according to Billboard, will help the Global Fund pass the $250 million mark.  (RED) has also teamed up with other big companies, including Apple and Coca Cola, to help establish a care for “mother-to-child transmission of HIV” by the year 2015.

“Invisible” is off of the Irish band’s new upcoming album, and will be available for free download via iTunes for up to 24 hours after the commercial airs during the Super Bowl next sunday.   An edited version of the song mixed by Tom Elmhirst and produced by Danger Mouse will be premiering .  For every download during the initial 24-hour period, Bank America has pledged to donate $1 to (RED), up to $2 million.  The money raised will go to the Global Fund to help Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, according to USA Today.  According to Billboard, (RED) and Bank of America are expecting to raise around $10 million in funding, including the donations generated from the 24-hour free download.

“Bank of America coming on as a (RED) partner to help the Global Fund’s efforts to eliminate AIDS is great news,” Bono said, according to Artists Direct.  “It’s the kind of game-changing influence that will not just deliver millions of dollars but raise consciousness and keep public pressure on putting an end to this devastating pandemic which has already taken the lives of 35 million people. And just in…the bank’s commitment of $10 million has resulted in the Gates Foundation, SAP and Africa’s Motsepe Family matching for a total of $22 million.”

This is not the first song off of U2’s upcoming album.  Their song “Ordinary Love” was featured in a trailer for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, starring Idris Elba.  The track has nabbed an Oscar nomination for best original song.  The band will be the musical guest on February 17th for The Tonight Show during Jimmy Fallon’s first time as host for the late night show.
