Nicole Kidman graces the Cannes Film Festival with ‘Grace of Monaco’

The Princess makes a grand entrance

Nicole Kidman has been known to play her fair share of classic beauties in the past.

What better way to debut her latest piece of beauty than to open the Cannes Film Festival. Her latest turn as glamorous and graceful Hollywood starlet turned princess Grace Kelly in Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco has been announced that it will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival. What a perfect entrance for a Princess.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will sashay its way onto the big screen this May 14 in the south of France as an official selection, though appearing out of competition. The biopic stars Nicole Kidman as the legendary movie star turned princess and Tim Roth as Prince Ranier.

As a result of its Cannes premiere, several intended release dates have been pushed back in the United States and in France. Upon the announcement that Grace of Monaco will open Cannes, French distributor Gaumont announced that it would push back its original March 19 release date and will announce a new French release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Director Dahan had previously been at odds with mogul producer Harvey Weinstein over suggested changes to the film. Dahan, who previously directed Marion Cotillard, in her Oscar-winning turn as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, shared his upset with Harvey Weinstein in an interview last October, sharing that, “There are two versions of the film. His and Weinstein’s.” He went on to say, “When you confront an American distributor like Weinstein, not to name names, there is not much you can do.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter the film has not yet been completed. The announcement of the world premiere at Cannes puts some added pressure for the filmmaker to get the final edits finished, if he is to show the film in time.

Nicole Kidman has charmed us with her elegant representations of historical women in the past. She played legendary photographer Diane Arbus in the artistic rendering Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus; she played Martha Gelhorn in the critically acclaimed TV movie Hemingway and Gelhorn; and for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
