Texting while walking can change posture or lead to injury

Texting while walking can present a danger to a person's posture and balance.

Love texting? Well your ability to walk and type at light speed could present a health problem in the future. A study released Wednesday revealed that texting while walking can cause issues with posture, according to WebMD.

Researchers found that doing both at the same time can cause people to swerve or walk slower. The findings published Wednesday in the Journal PLoS One found that when texting and walking for a long period of time a person’s balance could be thrown off.

The study conducted by Siobhan Schabrun from the University of Queensland in Australia looked at the effects of texting while walking in 26 healthy people. During the study each individual was asked to walk in a straight line three times: once without a cellphone, once while reading a text message and once while texting.

Using a device to text created a change in the body’s movement while walking. Although to a lesser degree, balance was also affected when participants were reading. The study found that while people were writing a text participants walked slower, swerved more and moved their necks less than when they weren’t using their devices or only reading.

Last year a study by Ohio State University revealed that the amount of pedestrians treated in U.S. emergency rooms with injuries related to phone use has more than doubled since 2005.
