Harvard grad, co-head writer, Staten Island local
With beloved SNL head writer and Weekend Update host Seth Meyers leaving his post, he’ll need a replacement.
The new man for the job, the successor to the throne is someone you may not have heard of but the rest of the SNL cast knows very well. His name is Colin Jost. (Rhymes with “most” not “lost.”) He’s been co-head writer since 2012.
Some things you need to know: He’s been writing for the show since 2005. He’s been dating Rashida Jones, whom he met at Seth Meyers’ wedding last September. Coincidentally, the couple both attended Harvard University, thought they did not actually meet while in attendance. He’s written dozens of sketches for the “not-ready-for-primetime” players, most notably his “Red Flag” sketch, starring Kristen Wiig. “She lived in Vegas for twelve years…” Red flag.
Everybody loves him!
Jost is no stranger to performing live. He’s been doing standup, appearing around the country and on programs including Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show.
His official bio, as shared on Entertainment Weekly, goes as follows: “[Jost] did Speech and Debate at Regis High School in Manhattan, then commuted home to Staten Island to be in musicals, even though he sings like a monster. Somehow he’s appeared in Fiddler on the Roof over a thousand times. Colin studied ‘the History and Literature of Russia and Britain’ at Harvard, though he remembers very little Russian and knows zero British history except that they used to have a Queen back in the 21st Century.” In case you didn’t notice, it’s all in the third person. That’s a comedy thing.
Jost also used to write for the Nickelodeon cartoon Kappa Mikey, which was about an American kid starring in a Japanese show….you gotta start somewhere!
If you’d like to hear more from Jost, he’s got a “Shouts and Murmurs” column in the latest issues of The New Yorker. Quite the accomplishment. Entertainment Weekly reports that it is his fourth time writing for the magazine and he writes a sendup of out of office autoreplies. His piece contains this line: “I will not be checking my landline, which is a can attached to a string.”
Jost has delivered lots of funny anecdotes in relationship to his upbringing on Staten Island and even wrote an autobiographical movie covering the subject, entitled Staten Island Summer, which starred current SNL cast member Bobby Moynihan. The film was directed by SNL producer Rhys Thomas, who also directed Stefon’s epic goodbye sketch, last year.
Jost’s number one goal on SNL: To squeeze in as many references to every single public high school in his home borough of Staten Island.
A worthy goal, indeed!
