A shooting at Purdue University has claimed one students life and police have a suspect in custody.
The New Year has started off with an unfortunate amount of shootings. On Tuesday afternoon a student at Purdue University in Indiana was fatally shot and another injured as a man with a gun began shooting in a basement classroom around noon.
The shooting was reported at an electrical engineering building on the northeast side of the West Lafayette campus, according to CNN. As of 2:42 p.m. ET police communicated with school officials that an individual had been arrested in connection with the shooting. Purdue Police Chief John Cox said that the shooter appeared to be targeting the victim, according to the Boston Herald.
The university had an active warning system which they used to send out alerts to students. The system came in handy Tuesday as all students were alerted by text message of the shooting and warned to stay inside until further notice. The university has a growing student population reporting 30,000 undergraduates for its 2013 academic year.
The growing use of technology as a method for news showed to be a key advantage in today’s shooting. Both students and the public were warned about the shooting through social media via Purdue’s and other Twitter handles. According to NBC the electrical engineering building is currently locked down but the remaining part of campus is open and classes have resumed.
Even with the Boston Herald reporting that an all clear has been issued for the campus it will still take time for everything to get back to normal.
According to law enforcement the victim hasn’t been identified and there isn’t a clear motive for the attack. As the students began to attend classes Tuesday afternoon and throughout the remainder of the week campus officials have insured the student body and staff that there will be counseling available for any in need.
