Miley Cyrus: Stripped down and unplugged on MTV

Her music gets undressed

Miley Cyrus wants to show us something raw, naked and in its truest form: her singing voice.

MTV announced that the 22-year-old pop sensation has signed on to join an elite group of singers who have performed on MTV’s renowned acoustic singing program MTV Unplugged.

The famed list of singers includes: Nirvana, Jay-Z, Katy Perry, Bob Dylan, Lil Wayne, Mariah Carey, Bruce Springsteen, Adele and Eric Clapton, who have all performed on the program since it began in 1989.

Perhaps the most cited acoustic performance on the program occurred when infamous rocker Kurt Cobain delivered his haunting melodies along with his Nirvana band mates in 1993, just six months before his death. Kurt wore his iconic oversized grandpa sweater as he strummed a guitar without amps or “Teen Spirit” strobe lights. His voice cooed like rocky velvet. The performance aired on November 1, 1994 and has since gained notoriety as one of his best live performances.

Miley intends to share her gifted singing voice by slowing down and sharing a more intimate portrayal of chart-toppers like “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball.” USA Today reports: Amy Doyle, executive vice president of music and talent programming strategy for MTV, made statement, adding, “Miley’s vision for the performance is like nothing we’ve ever seen. I can say that this will easily be one of the most memorable Unplugged performances to date.”

USA Today shares that we might be surprised at some of her chosen guests during her live performance. Could it be past Unplugged performer Lil Wayne or the Biebs after his egging stunt? Perhaps she’ll collaborate with former collaborator Robin Thicke, this time without the leotard.

Miley was voted MTV’s Best Artist of 2013 and she barely lost to Pope Francis for TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year. After only twenty minutes of MTV announcing her live acoustic performance, the singer noted on her Twitter page: “Miley Unplugged is already trending.” Shortly after, she tweeted, “They need to make rainbow Gatorade.” Perhaps even she is a bit dumfounded by her immense popularity and fame.

Strip away the dancing bears and the glittery little people, the wrecking balls and the twerking, and you’ve got a girl, singing her little heart out on an empty stage. Miley’s got the goods.

Before she heads out on her Bangerz tour in Vancouver on February 14 (MTV), she’d like to show us what we came for.

Miley Cyrus: MTV Unplugged is set to air on January 29 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
