Two dead, 10 injured in Omaha factory explosion

A fire at an Omaha, Nebraska agricultural plant killed two and injured 10.

The city of Omaha is in turmoil tonight after an explosion at an agricultural plant claimed the lives of two workers and potentially injured a number of others Monday morning. According to the NY Times the workers hopes for any remaining survivors was fading as workers combed through the debris.

The Omaha plant makes food and supplements for animals and 38 workers were inside at the time of the explosion. According to reports there was a fire and a partial building collapse that led to various injuries to those inside.

As of 5PM PST two people were dead and 10 workers had been taken to area hospitals for additional care. Omaha’s fire chief, Bernard J. Kanger Jr., said at a press conference that four of those in critical condition and six with non-life-threatening injuries. Seven others were on site but refused medical treatment and one firefighter was taken to a hospital with unreported reasons. An earlier report from Firehouse stated more could be trapped inside.

The NY Times confirmed this speculation Monday night reporting that Chief Kanger said Monday afternoon the search for survivors has transitioned to a search for bodies as the chance of survivors is not only slim but unexpected. Kanger did state that there were victims who had yet to be removed from the building and identified but didn’t provide a number of how many were still inside.

The building was owned by International nutrition and although it was clear that a fire was starting resulting in the building collapse there were no hazardous chemicals in the plant. A further investigation is being conducted to determine how the fire was started.

An update from the Nebraska Medical Center stated they were treating multiple injuries but 37-year-old, 38-year-old and a 58-year-old were all being treated but expected to survive. In total two people were dead, 10 injured and seven untreated for injuries. This left an additional 19 people unaccounted for. There is no current update on the mission to locate additional victims or workers who made it out of the plant but Chief Kanger did request further assistance from Lincoln law enforcement and is expected to continue the investigation over the next couple of hours.
