‘Black widow’ and Islamic militant group threaten Sochi Olympics

The 2014 Winter Olympics are being threatened as an Islamic militant group and "Black widow" vow to attack the games if they continue as planned.

The fun, sportsmanship and history of the Olympic games is being threatened this year as Russia continues to deal with terrorism. Monday a video reportedly created by two Islamic militants went viral as they threatened to bomb the Sochi Olympics if they were held in Russia. The Winter Olympics were scheduled to be in Russia years in advance and the threat of a “Black widow” or other terrorist organization plotting to attack it has authorities searching frantically to locate any involved.

Russian authorities are hunting in and around the southern city of Sochi for a woman they’ve identified as Ruzana Ibragimova. She promised to seek revenge for her husband who was an Islamic militant killed in 2013 by Russian security, CBS News producer Pat Milton reported.

The authorities have made posters and distributed them throughout the city of Sochi in areas near Olympic venues, which CBS confirmed. The term “black widows” refers to suicide attackers who resort to terrorism as a means to defend their husband’s honor. This year isn’t the first time that the term or widows themselves have been linked to terrorism or attacks. Only two months ago 30 people were killed in the Russian city of Volgograd which has since sparked increase conversation about the safety of Russia to hosts the Olympic games, Euro News reported.

On Monday a warning was posted to Vladimir Putin and Sochi Olympics in which it was stated that if the Olympics were held, there would be “a present for him and all tourists.” There were two men in the video who claimed responsibility and were acted on behalf of Vilyat Dagestan, according to Euro News, a group linked to an Iraqi extremist faction called Ansar al-Sunna. However, the Washington Post did emphasize that it hasn’t been confirmed if these two men were actually involved in the carrying out of the attacks.

Hours after the Russian authorities announced a search for the “Black widow” It is not clear if they have made any progress. It has been reported by IOL News that the US has offered to help secure Sochi with additional military aid including air and naval assets as needed.

The Washington Post said Monday evening that Russia’s counter-terrorism agency will continue to investigate the video while authorities search for any potential clues and the “Black widow” for further information on this potential threat.
