Rep. Sean Maloney to wed longtime partner

Rep. Maloney made the announcement Tuesday.

Same-sex marriages continue to grow across the U.S. in 2014 with many public officials coming out not only in support of legislation, but with their partners in hand.

The record-breaking year for same-sex marriage is continuing in 2014. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) announced Tuesday that he is engaged to his longtime partner, CNN reports.

Maloney, 47,  became engaged to his partner, Randy Florke, on Christmas Day. The couple has been together for 21 years and have three children together. Although Maloney’s announcement is rocking Capitol Hill he isn’t the first to marry his same-sex partner. In 2012, Massachusetts Republican Barney Frank married his long-time partner Jim Ready before he retired.

Out of 535 House and Senate seats there are seven openly gay or bi-sexual members of the 113th Congress, according to Bustle. Although they currently represent a minority of congress members there is a growing acceptance for same-sex marriage across the country.

New York is one of 17 states that have adopted laws to legalize gay marriage and 2014 has already started with growing support. Pew Research Center’s recent study stated that around half of all Americans now support gay marriage.
