Adam Sandler in everything!
Adam Sandler delivered some comedy favorites in his heyday: “Happy Gilmore” and “Billy Madison” being two of his most memorable and well-loved; but in recent years, with the making of “Grown Ups” followed by more “Grown Ups 2”, this guy can’t seem to stay away from seeing some major Razzie love. In 2012, he earned an unprecedented sweep in an all-ten-categories with the unfortunate comedy “JACK & JILL”, in which Sandler played both male and female leads, since then he’s been on a Razzie roll.
The Golden Raspberry Awards or “Razzies” started in 1980 as a spoof of Hollywood’s awards season, a time when the accolades and Dior gowns flow like Golden Globes’ champagne. Unlike every other award show, at the Razzies, the acknowledgment is not for who gave the most gripping, realistic, heart-touching performance; rather, it’s for the worst, the cheesiest, utmost muggiest performances Hollywood swings our way.
And we have many films and artists, to thank for these deliveries of such horrible airplane flicks we’re bound to see on the shelves at the Target checkout line.
Drum roll, please..
For Worst Picture of the Year:
“The Lone Ranger” starring Johnny Depp. You know, the one where Captain Sparrow has a bird on his head, and there’s lots of fast trains and stuff? Oh, and a guy named Armie Hammer, as his co-star. Like Arm and Hammer, the detergent. Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Christmas” – It should be mentioned that a Madea Family Anything could probably make it on the list. The hopeful sci-fi coming-of-age flop “After Earth” starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith, showing that even Will Smith can’t save the Earth in every movie. “Movie 43” starring Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, Richard Gere, Elizabeth banks, and written by thirteen screenwriters, received a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Ick!
Sylvester Stallone earned three nominations for his three movies that came out last year: “Bullet to the Head”, “Escape Plan”, and “Grudge Match”, so don’t feel too bad, Adam.
This year’s winners are announced on March 1st, the night before the 86th annual Academy Awards. Some past high-profile Razzie winners have shown up in person to accept their gold spray-painted statues, like good sports Sandra Bullock and the lovely Halle Berry.
The Awards show, which started by copywriter and publicist John J. B. Wilson, was first held in his living room. As it grew in popularity and notoriety, more people began attending the schmaltzy faux Academy Award Show. The ceremony is modeled after the Academy Awards, but it has been self-described as “deliberately low-end and tacky.”
The term raspberry used in the Award show’s name comes from the expression “blowing a raspberry” which means to make an unpleasant noise expressing derision or displeasure with something. “Pbbt” would be the closest to reading the sound. Imagine putting your tongue between your lips and blowing to make a fart sound, that’s blowing a raspberry. The more you know.
Congratulations to all the nominees! We’re sure you’re thrilled.
