The rapper and reality television star was arrested, then released to attend his mother's funeral.

Performer Flavor Flav of legendary rap group Public Enemy was arrested Thursday morning after speeding in a black Hyundai in Hempstead, New York, according to TMZ.

The rapper, whose legal name is William Drayton, 54, was pulled over at around 9:30 a.m. for driving 79 mph in 55 mph zone, reports VVN Music. Police officers at the scene who ran a license check discovered that Flav was driving with a whopping 16 suspensions on his license.

He was also found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Flav was arrested for Felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana (a violation), and traffic violations. He was later released from jail on an appearance ticket in order to attend his mother’s funeral. Anna Dreyton, his mother, died Dec. 31.

He is expected back in Nassau County First District Court in Hempstead on Jan. 28.

This is not the rapper’s first brush with the law. He was arrested in 2002 for similar charges including driving with a suspended license, traffic violations and missing parole meetings. More recently, in 2009, he was once again arrested for driving with a suspended license and other outstanding warrants.

Flavor Flav was a member of the popular hip group Public Enemy that found mainstream success in the late 1980s and early ’90s. He went on to use his love life to entertain television audiences with VH1’s reality series “The Surreal Life” and “Flavor of Love.”
