Extreme sports programming will be available to Xbox 360 users first, prior to opening up on the Xbox One.
If you have been feeling a shortage of extreme sports action in your life recently, then GoPro and Microsoft may well have a solution for you.
According to a recent breaking report from EndGadget, GoPro will team up with Microsoft to offer a unique extreme sports television channel. The channel will be made available over Microsoft’s Xbox Live gaming network, and will be accessible to users of both the Xbox One – the latest Microsoft console, released in November of last year – and the older Xbox 360.
EndGadget reports that GoPro has not yet decided or confirmed a launch date for the channel, but has stated that extreme sports programming will be available to Xbox 360 users first, prior to opening up on the Xbox One. Precisely why the older console format is taking precedence over the newer one in this channel launch has not been revealed, but it could have something to do with GoPro wanting to test the channel to make sure all of the kinks have been ironed out.
In fact, kinks in the new extreme sports channel are already being ironed out. Supposedly, the channel is already live and programming is being made available. The catch is that the channel is only accessible to passengers of Virgin America airline flights. In other words, if you don’t have a reason to fly Virgin America, you can probably wait to see the new GoPro channel until it officially goes live on the Xbox Live platforms.
If anyone could succeed with an extreme sports channel in this day and age, GoPro and Xbox Live are fairly good bets. The latter has taken the extreme sports world by storm over the past year or so, unveiling a line of cameras that have been designed specifically to capture daring deeds. The cameras can be worn or mounted, making them particularly useful for capturing first person views of death defying skydives, high speed dirt bike or snowmobile adventures, or high flying skateboard or snowboard stunts. By creating lightweight and affordable sporting cameras, GoPro has made it possible for casual daredevils to become veritable stuntmen.
Xbox Live, meanwhile, has a vast user base that should come in handy in building a following for the GoPro channel. Precisely what the GoPro extreme sports programming will look like remains to be seen, but it’s not difficult to imagine a few cool things the company could do. From strapping cameras to Olympic extreme sports athletes to holding competitions to find the most daring GoPro videographer out there, the channel has plenty of potential.
