The MiniDrone will be operated via an iPhone application.
Forget all of the negative press surrounding drones and their use for warfare: Parrot, the company behind the AR.Drone remote control quadricopter, has developed a new line of toys cut from the same fabric as drones, and according to a report from the Verge, the toys are both affordable and safe for children.
Where Parrot’s flagship remote control device, the AR.Drone, is built to industrial standards and costs a hefty $300 – and that’s without the extra batteries or the flight recorder that really make the drone worth having – the company has stated that it will make sure its lower-end toy models will be significantly less expensive when they make it to market later this year.
The first of Parrot’s new toys is called the MiniDrone, and it is essentially a smaller, more kid-friendly (and indoor use friendly) version of the AR.Drone. Like its higher-end cousin, the MiniDrone is a quadricopter that can elevate itself thanks to four separate propellers.
Writers at the Verge say that the MiniDrone really is Mini – it can fit in the palm of your hand – but that it doesn’t lack for either control or power. The rotors are loud and the device quick and zippy, but Parrot’s developers worked hard to make sure that the MiniDrone would be easy to balance and control sensitive. This way, the drone won’t be as easy to crash as it seems like a fast-moving indoor helicopter would, in turn making it safer for children to use. Even if it does hit a wall, the MiniDrone is designed to bounce back and correct its course rapidly.
Like the AR.Drone, the MiniDrone won’t come with its own remote control. Rather, the device will be operated via an iPhone application, essentially combining the principles of virtual gaming with the physics of real-life flight. The MiniDrone also comes with attachable wheels which can be used to allow the toy to either roll around on the floor or to hit obstacles without incurring any damage.
But buyers simply looking for a remote control car won’t want to go with the MiniDrone. On the contrary, Parrot has also developed a remote control car called the Jumping Sumo that will utilize a lot of the same drone-like concepts as the MiniDrone or the AR.Drone, but will do so while remaining grounded. The car is controlled through iPhone app as well, but unlike most remote control cars, only has two wheels, both of which are controlled independently of one another. This divided control scheme makes it easy for the Jumping Sumo to turn and maneuver, and also makes way for special features that allow the device to jump, twirl at a high speed, or perform other eye-catching stunts.
