Madonna rips critics after posting picture of son holding liquor bottle

Controversy has been a continuous aspect of pop icon Madonna's decades-long career. In unprecedented fashion, her latest controversy involves her children.

Madonna posted a photo to Instagram on Saturday, Jan. 4 that depicts her son Rocco holding a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin. He’s surrounded on each side by two young men, each holding a bottle of Belvedere Vodka.

While the legal drinking age in the U.S. is 21 years old, the legal drinking age in Switzerland — where the image was taken while the family vacations in the Swiss Alps — is 16. Rocco, Madonna’s son from her marriage to director Guy Ritchie, is 13.

Madonna captioned the photo, “The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014.”

Though the image has garnered more than 22,000 “likes” as of press time, not everyone who viewed the photo was pleased, according to E! Online.

One person commented, “Obviously not the smartest thing to do to post a pic of your 13yr [sic] old with booze.” The same person continued, “It’s just about perception and this gives a bad image … It was begging for negative publicity.”

The pop singer defended the photo on Jan. 5, additionally commenting, “No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor!”

Other people who commented came to Madonna’s defense, “No one has ever said that Madonna is a bad mother. Don’t forget that she raised most of us! I have nothing but love for Madonna.”

In a 2012 interview with Ellen Degeneres, Ritchie provided insight into Madonna’s parenting style. “She’s a good mother. Yes. That’s all I have to say,” he shared. “She’s very strict, but in a good way.”
