The actress died of natural causes, surrounded by friends.
Actress Alicia Rhett died Friday at her retirement home in Charleston, S.C., according to CNN. She was 98.
Rhett died of natural causes around 5 p.m. at Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community. She was surrounded by friends, said Kimberly Farfone Borts, a spokesperson for the community.
Born in Savannah, Ga., she later relocated with her mother to Charleston, after her father died in World War I. There she participated in local theater productions. During one of these productions she was spotted for the role of India Wilkes in 1939’s cinematic success “Gone With the Wind.”
In the film based on Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Rhett played the antagonist to Vivien Leigh’s Scarlet O’Hara.
After the highly success film brought her national recognition, she chose to return to Charleston, where she continued to participate in the local arts scene. Her artwork, including sketches of “Gone With the Wind” cast members, hangs in the state library and in many plantations in coastal South Carolina.
She developed a reputation as a talented artist, according to Borts.
