Dwyane Wade, who plays guard for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association, publicly acknowledged Monday that he has fathered a child with a woman other than his fiancée actress Gabrielle Union, according to ABC News.

Wade said the child, born to another woman approximately one month ago, was the result of a short break in his long-term relationship with the actress. The couple announced their engagement Dec. 21 through Twitter.

“In our time apart, in our break, in our pain and our hurt, a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son who was born healthy,” said Wade.

Wade has two other children, boys Zion and Zaire, with his first wife, who he divorced in 2007, according to Sports Illustrated. Wade was granted sole custody of Zion and Zaire in March 2012.

Wade, whose memoir is titled “A Father First,” said that he has had a chance to see his new son.

“I’m involved in my kids’ lives, you know,” Wade said. “When my kids lived at home with me, when they weren’t living at home with me, I tried to do everything I could to see them.”

“This is something obviously private for my family that we will continue to deal with as a family,” he continued. “But we have a blessing, too, to the bloodline, the Wade bloodline.”
