Beyonce defends use of Challenger audio clip as ‘tribute’

The pop songstress recently came under fire for sampling audio from the space shuttle Challenger disaster in her new song "XO."

Beyonce claims that using audio from the space shuttle Challenger disaster was a “tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten,” according to CNN.

The singer released a statement Monday that was first reported by ABC News. It states that “the song ‘XO’ was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen, so love and appreciate every minute that you have with those who mean the most to you.”

“XO,” from Beyonce’s latest record “The Visual Album,” begins with the Steve Nesbitt, NASA public affairs officer, saying “Flight controllers here looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously, a major malfunction.”

These were the first words heard by witnesses — both at the Kennedy Space Station and on live television — to the space shuttle Challenger disaster on Jan. 28, 1986.

“We were disappointed to learn that an audio clip from the day we lost our heroic Challenger crew was used in the song ‘XO,'” said Dr. June Scobee Rodgers, wife of Challenger flight commander Dick Scobee. “The moment included in this song is an emotionally difficult one for the Challenger families, colleagues and friends.”

NASA did not appreciate Beyone’s gesture either. In a statement, a spokesperson for the agency said, “The Challenger accident is an important part of our history; a tragic reminder that space exploration is risky and should never be trivialized.”

“My heart goes out to the families of those lost in the Challenger disaster,” Beyonce said.

All seven crew members aboard the Challenger died when the space shuttle exploded.
