Katy Perry rocks out at Britney Spears’ first Las Vegas gig

The pop singer's long-term production features a ring of fire, confetti and multiple costume changes.

Britney Spears performed the first of many Las Vegas shows at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on Friday, Dec. 27, according to E! Online.

The audience of 4,500 people included celebrities Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Selena Gomez, as well as Spears’ family and friends. Friday’s show marked the debut of the 32-year-old singer’s two-year residency at the casino, where she is scheduled to perform 50 shows a year, in 2014 and 2015.

The 90-minute production included a ring of fire, confetti, a live band and Spears flying through the air, reports The Washington Post. She performed hits that spanned her career, including numbers from “…Baby One More Time” to her latest release, “Britney Jean.”

Some audience members told The Washington Post that they believed Spears had lip-synced certain parts, though a spokesperson with the casino’s parent company states Spears sings her entire set. Entertainment Programming Vice President Kurt Melien, at Caesar’s Entertainment Corp., said that Spears sings along with a recorded track to guide her through the more physically demanding aspects of her production. The synth sounds that characterize her vibrato have also been added to the track.

Spears opened the 24-song set with “Work Bitch” and closed with “Crazy.” She returned for an encore, performing “Till the World Ends.”

At different times throughout the show, Spears donned a “skin-tight, sequined bodysuit” and dressed as a “giant, white-winged angel,” according to Billboard.

After the show, Spears commented on Twitter, “Wow … perfect audience for the 1st #PieceOfMe show. That was AMAZING!”

The pop singer’s two-year stint could be extended if casino executives deem the residency successful.
