A&E to reinstate Phil Robertson on ‘Duck Dynasty’

The television network lifts Robertson's short suspension for making anti-gay comments to GQ Magazine. GLAAD does not approve.

A&E Networks announced on Friday that Phil Robertson will resume his role on “Duck Dynasty” in 2014, according to ABC News.

Robertson, who stars as the patriarch on a reality television show that follows a prosperous family’s hunting business, had previously been suspended from the show by the network for equating homosexuality with bestiality and adultery. The comments were published in an interview with GQ Magazine.

In the same interview, Robertson stated that he didn’t believe black Americans were treated unequally or unfairly before the civil rights movement.

“After discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming ‘Duck Dynasty’ later this spring with the entire Robertson family,” said the network in a statement.

GLAAD, originally called the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, was not one of those advocacy groups. The organization responded to Robertson’s return in a statement issued Saturday. “Phil Robertson should look African American and gay people in the eyes and hear about the hurtful impact of praising Jim Crow laws and comparing gay people to terrorists,” it read. “If dialogue with Phil is not part of next steps then A+E has chosen profits over African American and gay people — especially its employees and viewers.”

In the aforementioned A&E Networks-issued statement, the channel explained that the television series “is not a show about one man’s views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family…a family that America has come to love.”

According to E! Online, the fourth-season premiere of “Duck Dynasty” was watched by 11.8 million viewers — the highest ratings for an episode of reality television in cable history.
