For McDonald’s employees, McResource offered web-based information to assist employees is no longer available, reports CNN. The website has been an ongoing source of embarrassment for the fast food giant ever since it went live. Taking the site down to prevent further missteps was a long time coming.
One example is a McResource budget planning guide. Fast food is known for paying low wages and McDonald’s put up a guide to help their employees manage finances. Unfortunately, the guide was not a realistic one and also clearly acknowledged that its employees were not making living wages. For example, the budget planning guide left a line for income from a second job, which many took as indicating that McDonald’s employees would need second jobs to be able to live. Also, the budget planning guide did not include expenses for food or gasoline, making it an unrealistic planning tool by overlooking necessary expenses.
The budget planning tool was also slammed for being out of touch with reality. The University of California Berkeley Labor Center and University of Illinois released a study in October that said 52% of families of fast food workers receive assistance from a public program like Medicaid, food stamps, the Earned Income Tax Credit or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. However, McResource offered a guide on how much one should tip a pool cleaner, housekeeper, and even an au pair.
McDonald’s received another slap in the face when its own site criticized its food, reports CNBC. McResource told readers that fast foods are quick, reasonably priced, and readily available alternatives to home cooking. However, these foods are convenient and economical for a busy lifestyle, but they must remember that fast foods are typically high in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt and may put people at risk for becoming overweight.
Earlier this year, a study published online in BMJ shows that diners at fast food restaurants may be consuming even more calories than they think. According to Live Strong, on average, adult men should consume 2,500 calories and adult women 2,000 calories. If eating three meals per day, caloric intake at each meal should be between 650 and 700 for women and between 800 and 850 for a man. Snacks should be at or below 200 calories and, if consuming snacks, calories at other meals may need to be reduced.
