Ryan O’Neal awarded Warhol portrait of Farrah Fawcett

A jury decides that Ryan O'Neal, not the University of Texas, is the rightful owner of the portrait by Andy Warhol.

Actor Ryan O’Neal will keep an Andy Warhol portrait of Farrah Fawcett, his lover from 1979 until her death in 2009.

A Los Angeles jury had awarded Ryan O’Neal rightful ownership of the piece painted in Warhol’s pop art style. In the portrait, Fawcett has bright green eyes, red lips and vivid eye make-up. Painted in 1980, the portrait has an estimated worth from $1 million to $12 million, according to CNN.

Jury deliberations began Monday afternoon, concluding 3:25 PST Thursday. The jury’s decision was not unanimous, but O’Neal needed to convince only nine of the 12 jury members to win his case. A decision was reached shortly after O’Neal’s testimony was reread to the jury.

After her death from cancer in 2009, Fawcett willed her art collection to the University of Texas, where she studied art. While O’Neal acknowledged that Fawcett had bequeathed her entire collection to the university, he remained in possession of the Warhol portrait, as he believed it belonged to him.

Warhol actually made two prints of the actress’ portrait. The University of Texas argued that both portraits belonged to Fawcett, and therefore the university. O’Neal claimed that one of the portraits belonged to him, as a gift for arranging the meeting between the artist and the actress. The university disagreed and sued. O’Neal counter-sued.

“Ryan O’Neal wasn’t going to voluntarily give the portrait up,” David Beck, lawyer for the university said, “so we had to try the case.”

After the verdict was read, Fawcett’s sons Patrick and Redmond rejoiced. O’Neal was not present. He was undergoing minor surgery to remove a skin cancer lesion.

“I know she had something to do with this up there,” said Redmond later outside the courthouse, referring to his mother. “It’s a great Christmas gift, man, you know? What great timing. We didn’t want to go into the holidays with them taking it.”
