Phil Robertson of ‘Duck Dynasty’ suspended for GQ interview comments

A&E has removed Phil Robertson from his popular program indefinitely citing his homophobic comments to the magazine.

Phil Robertson’s anti-gay comments in the January 2014 issue of GQ have resulted in his departure from the popular television series “Duck Dynasty” on A&E Networks. In the article, Robertson, a devout Christian, likens homosexuality to bestiality and claims the lifestyle is a sin.

Robertson is considered the patriarch on “Duck Dynasty,” a reality television show that chronicles one family’s profitable hunting business operations in rural Louisiana.

Robertson says, “It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. … But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

Drew Magary, the GQ reporter who conducted the interview, visits Robertson in his home. Robertson comments candidly. “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he states. “Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Wilson Cruz, a representative of GLADD, the preeminent media advocacy organization for the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, responded with a statement. “Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe.” Cruz continues, “He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans — and Americans — who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples.”

Cruz calls for A&E and the series’ sponsors to reexamine their professional relationships with the reality television star. A&E released a statement Wednesday, “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series ‘Duck Dynasty.'”

“His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

Robertson’s quick departure has led some conservatives to cry foul. According the Chicago Tribune, petitions demanding his reinstatement began circulating almost immediately.

On Wednesday, Robertson released his own statement to Fox411, “I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”
