Finally, proof that true love is dead and romance as we know it is one big farce: America’s sweethearts, Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, have filed for divorce. The news comes on the heels of an odd year that has seen reports of Lamar Odom’s heroin addiction. The couple hasn’t been seen together in public for weeks. The date of separation is officially listed as TBD.

Hollywood Life has the divorce papers. The reason for the uncertain separation date is unclear, but HL speculates that it’s likely because of the rocky nature of the couple’s relationship over the past several months. Though they briefly reunited afterwards, Khloe reportedly kicked Lamar out of their home following his August DUI arrest, for which he received three months of probation. The media also recently reported on alleged infidelity issues on the part of Odom.

Kardashian is requesting that all financial assets accumulated before, during and after the relationship (ALL of the money, basically) remain separate with respect to both parties. This appears to be in line with the prenup the couple signed prior to their marriage. Kardashian is requesting that the court remove all obligations of spousal support for both parties. She also petitioning for the judge to restore her maiden name of Kardashian and all of the honor and prestige that goes along with it.

The divorce should be a relatively rote affair and free of drama given the prenup and the couple’s lack of children, though anyone familiar with the Kardashian Klan knows that’s unlikely to be the case. The couple was married on September 27, 2009, and celebrated their fourth anniversary this year. The two were frequently featured on multiple reality series, including “Keeping up with the Kardashians.” There are no reports regarding planned television coverage of the divorce proceedings.

Kardashian, 29, was spotted sans wedding ring at a Hollywood Reporter‘s Women in Entertainment Breakfast Wednesday. She’s been seen recently with Dodgers’ outfielder Matt Kemp, who she’s reportedly dating. Odom recently completed treatment at a rehab facility for substance abuse.

The message for America is clear: If Khloe and Lamar can’t make it, what chance do we have?
