People Magazine reports that actors Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, both 42, have announced their formal separation after getting married in 2003.

“Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time,” reps for the couple tell PEOPLE. “Their primary focus and concern is for their son. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time.”

The two met when they were both costars in the mid-1990s original production of the Broadway musical Rent. Diggs played the character of Benjamin “Benny” Coffin III, while Menzel played Maureen Johnson, a lesbian performance artist. The two stars have a son together, Walker, born in 2009. Menzel is perhaps best recognized for winning a Tony award for her role in Wicked. Diggs has starred in several movies since the late 90’s, most notably How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Menzel spoke to People in May of this year, foreshadowing that things aren’t always easy between her and Diggs.

“We work at it,” she said. “I’m not going to glamorize it or glorify it – we go through tough times like everybody else, but we love each other very much. We try not to be away from each other for more than two weeks at a time, and we try to find new ways to communicate.”

The couple made news in January 2013, when they returned from the SAG awards to discover a burglar in their home. Diggs apprehended the man, holding him captive until police arrived.
