Xiaflex is the first FDA-approved non-surgical option for men with Peyronie's disease.
It’s a disease that anyone suffering from would probably have trouble talking about with friends and family. However, curved penis sufferers now have a new treatment option for this embarrassing and often uncomfortable disease. According to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Xiaflex has been given the thumbs up to treat men who have a curved penis (a condition called Peyronie’s disease).
Xiaflex is the first FDA-approved non-surgical option for men with Peyronie’s disease. Having Peyronie’s disease means that you have at least a 30-degree curvature of the penis during sexual arousal. The FDA says that the embarrassing condition is the result of scar tissue that forms under the skin of the penis. As a result of this scar-tissue buildup, the man experiences an unusual “bend” in the penis during erection. Peyronie’s disease may also result in symptoms during sex.
Xiaflex is comprised of the protein product of a living organism and was first given the thumbs up by the FDA to treat people can’t properly utilize their fingers, a disease known as Dupuyren’s contracture. According to the FDA, Xiaflex aids men with curved penises by eroding away the buildup of collagen that leads to the strange curve in the penis.
If you have a curved penis and decide to be treated with Xiaflex, you’ll experience a maximum of four treatment cycles. During each treatment cycle you’ll be given two injections of Xiaflex directly into the penis. You’ll also take part in a penile modeling procedure.
How much does all of this cost? The New York Times says that the treatments are quite expensive. According to the newspaper, a complete course of Xiaflex treatments would cost an individual about $26,000.
During safety and effectiveness trials, researchers found that Xiaflex treatment greatly decreased penile bend problems when compared to treatment with a placebo.
