Bent penis? The FDA has the fix

Peyronie's disease is caused by scar tissue that develops under the skin of the penis.

If you suffer from a curved penis, the FDA has a new treatment option for you. The FDA has approved Xiaflex to treat men who have a “bent” penis, a condition known as Peyronie’s disease. This medicine is the first health agency-approved non-surgical treatment for men with this uncomfortable issue. According to the FDA, individuals with Peyronie’s disease experience a curvature in the penis of at least 30 degrees during an erection.

Peyronie’s disease is caused by scar tissue that develops under the skin of the penis. The result of the formation of scar tissue is a strange curvature in the penis during erection. A person who suffers from Peyronie’s disease can also deal with painful symptoms during sex.

According to the FDA, Xiaflex is made from the protein product of a living organism and was first approved by the health agency to treat Dupuyren’s contracture, a progressive disease that can affect a person’s ability to properly use their fingers. Researchers believe that Xiaflex helps individuals with “bent” penises by breaking down the collection of collagen that results in the unnatural bend in the penis.

Men with Peyronie’s disease undergo a maximum of four treatment cycles. Each treatment cycle includes two injections of Xiaflex directly into the penis, as well as a penile modeling procedure.

The New York Times reports Xiaflex costs $3,300 an injection, meaning that a complete course of Xiaflex treatments would cost approximately $26,000.

Researchers verified the safety and effectiveness of Xiaflex in two studies, involving more than 830 men. They discovered that Xiaflex treatment significantly reduced penile curvature issues when compared to treatment with a placebo.

According to the FDA, users of Xiaflex could suffer adverse reactions such as penile hematoma, penile swelling and penile pain.
