Arrowhead Stadium death being treated as murder

A mysterious death at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium leads police to detain three "persons of interest."

The Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff hopes weren’t the only thing lost after last night’s football game against the Denver Broncos. According to police, A man has died after an altercation with a car owner who discovered him inside his vehicle in the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Police say they are treating the case as a homicide. Though three people have been questioned, no arrests have been made and police have released few details, including the victim’s name and cause of death. He was believed to be in his 20’s.

“We don’t know if the person had a health condition, had a heart attack. We don’t know,” said Darin Snapp, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police. “We’re going to investigate this as a homicide until we hear differently. Right now it’s a suspicious death but we are going to investigate it as a homicide.”

The man’s death is thought to be the result of an altercation that occurred after a car owner found the victim inside a vehicle that did not belong to him. The owner of the car returned with his son and found the man who “did not belong” inside the vehicle, Snapp said. The two men scuffled, the man collapsed and the son ran for help, he said. When paramedics arrived, the man was unconscious on the ground. The paramedics administered first aid and the man was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, Snapp said.

The death comes precisely one year to after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, at a home not far from the stadium. Belcher then drove to the team’s practice facility and fatally shot himself in front of then-coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli. Sports Illustrated’s Robert Klemko tweeted that Sunday’s incident occurred about a quarter mile from where Belcher killed himself, adding that “The man was not shot or stabbed.” According to KCTV’s report, police have not said whether the car’s owner and his son are the suspects

A few months earlier, in September 2012, a gunman attacked a Kansas City Royals employee in the same parking lot, which services Kauffman Stadium as well. The man shot the employee once in the torso and then returned to his vehicle to commit suicide.

The police are in the process of questioning several witnesses, including three people that were taken to Kansas City Police Department headquarters for further questioning. Though in custody, the three witnesses are not formally considered suspects. Right now they’re persons of interest,” Snapp said.

Little is known about either man or any relationship they may have had. Whether or not they knew one another remains unknowns. It’s also unclear whether or not the man and his son were watching the game from inside Arrowhead Stadium, or tailgating in the parking lot with other fans.

The unsolved death comes as more bad news for Kansas City fans and residents, after the Chiefs fell to the Denver Broncos 35-28. It was Kansas City’s third loss in as many weeks, and the second loss this season to their AFC West rivals.
