“What he said was inappropriate and very sad,” de Blasio told reporters.
New York City mayor elect Bill de Blasio slammed actor Alec Baldwin’s homophobic slurs during a visit to a Brooklyn food bank on Wednesday. Interestingly, de Blasio was the first ever guest on Baldwin’s recently canceled MSNBC show, “Up Late with Alec Baldwin.” Now, it appears the honeymoon has ended.
“What he said was inappropriate and very sad,” de Blasio told reporters, according to The New York Observer. “I think, you know, he’s someone who is very intelligent and on many issues has said important things. But in this case, what he said was just plain inappropriate.”
MSNBC announced Tuesday that they were cancelling Baldwin’s show after the actor used a homophobic slur (“c***sucking f**”) during a videotaped incident with a photographer outside of his apartment earlier this month. Baldwin has said that he called the photographer a “c***sucking fathead.” Video of the incident suggests otherwise.
“We are jointly confirming that ‘Up Late’ will not continue on MSNBC,” the network and a representative for Baldwin said on Tuesday.
“I did not intend to hurt or offend anyone with my choice of words, but clearly I have — and for that I am deeply sorry,” Baldwin said in a statement following his show’s cancellation. “I understand that and will choose mine with great care going forward.”
Shortly after his show was cancelled, Baldwin blamed Rich Ferraro, the spokesman for GLAAD, for his misfortune.
“Rich Ferraro, this is probably one of his greatest triumphs,” Baldwin told Gothamist. “They killed my show.”
Ferraro took offense at the idea that helping to get Baldwin’s show cancelled was his “greatest triumph,” but he acknowledged that the outcome was a “win” for LGBT rights.
“I consider GLAAD’s campaigns to end the Boy Scout of America’s ban on gay scouts, raise national visibility of the violence and inequality facing transgender people, and battling for marriage equality to be among my ‘greatest triumphs,’ Ferraro wrote in a statement, obtained by the Los Angeles Times. “But if a teacher, coach, local radio show host, or parent realizes that anti-LGBT slurs are outdated and unacceptable because of this Baldwin issue, I guess we’ll call it a win. Alec Baldwin’s team has not been open to turning this incident into an opportunity for public education and that’s unfortunate.”
Though de Blasio may have received some campaign support from Baldwin, he didn’t hesitate to point the finger of blame at the actor for having his own show cancelled.
“I’m sorry that he suffered the consequences he did, but, you know, it was the result of his own actions,” said de Blasio when asked about the cancellation of Baldwin’s show. “So I would simply say: That’s my view on what he said and what he did.”
