SUPER spicy snacks sending kids to the ER [and not just for red stool]

Consuming massive of amounts of this super spicy snack will turn kids' stool bright red or orange because of the red food dye.

While they may be really tasty, SUPER spicy snacks, like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, are sending children to the ER. According to a new report from ABC News, pediatricians are warning that super spicy foods may have negative health effects.

What happens when a hungry young boy eats too many spicy snacks? Well, 12-year-old Andrew Medina found out the hard way. After experiencing stomach pain that wouldn’t go away, Medina asked his mom to take him to the doctor. He told his doctor that he felt burning on his left side.

“Like if you have a bruise or something. It really hurts a lot,” said Medina, as quoted by KABC. The boy reportedly ate 20 to 30 bags of spicy chips a month.

Though it may seems like a rare occurrence, cases like Medina’s are actually seen quite frequently.

“I’ve seen a number of children who eat four or five bags and come in screaming in pain,” Dr. Martha Rivera, of the White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles, told KABC. “We have a population who loves to eat the hot spicy, not real foods, and they come in with these real complaints.”

Dr. Rivera said that she’ll see upwards of six or more cases a day of kids with gastritis due to overeating of super spicy snacks.

According the University of Maryland Medical Center, gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining. In the majority of cases, gastritis does not permanently damage the stomach lining. Many things can cause gastritis, including irritation of the stomach lining from eating spicy foods. Treatment of gastritis is based on the cause of the issue. Some cases of gastritis may be resolved by changing your diet, while others may resolve by themselves over time.

According to KMOX, eating a lot of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos can also send kids to the ER for a entirely different reason. Apparently, consuming massive of amounts of this super spicy snack (which people love to do) will turn kids’ stool bright red or orange because of the red food dye.
