Virginia election results: Ken Cuccinelli leads Terry McAuliffe

Cuccinelli has reportedly raised $16.8 million to McAuliffe's $26.3 million.

The Virginia election results are rolling in and Republican Ken Cuccinelli holds a small lead over Democrat Terry McAuliffe. As of 8:53 p.m., Virginia’s State Board of Elections reports that 67.89 percent of the precincts are reporting. Cuccinelli currently has 47.52 percent of the votes, while McAuliffe has 45.22 percent of the votes. Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis has 6.96 percent of the votes.

According to POLITICO, McAuliffe is “solidly favored” to defeat Cuccinelli. POLITICO added that the turnout in the Old Dominion state is on track to eclipse the low voter participation in the 2009 governor’s race.

Citing the Virginia Public Access Project, FoxNews.com reports that the race has already surpassed previous fundraising for an Old Dominion state gubernatorial race. Cuccinelli has reportedly raised $16.8 million to McAuliffe’s $26.3 million.

Interestingly, the Richmond Times-Dispatch decided to endorse neither candidate for Virginia governor in 2013. “Our choice for governor in 2013: none of the above,” read the title of an article explaining their decision. “We cannot in good conscience endorse a candidate for governor,” the newspaper wrote. This was the first time in modern Virginia that the newspaper had not endorsed a gubernatorial nominee.
