Taylor Farms recalling foods over concerns about possible Listeria contamination

Neither the FSIS, FDA or the company have received any reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Taylor Farms, a company based in Jessup, Maryland, has recalled approximately 5,084 pounds of broccoli salad kit products.  These kits contain packets of salad dressing that are the subject of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

These specific salad kits were shipped to distributors and retail locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Vermont.

Taylor Farms informed FSIS that salad dressing that was subject to the FDA recall was included  in the salad kits. Neither the FSIS, FDA or the company have received any reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of these products, however.

Consumption of any food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their newborns. People outside of these groups can also be impacted, but illness outside of these groups is far less common.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant women, the infection can result in miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infections of newborns. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.

FSIS conducts recall effectiveness checks on a routine basis to verify recalling firms are notifying their customers of the recall and that proper steps are being taken to ensure that the product is no longer available to consumers.

The following products are subject to this recall:

  • 6.06-lb. boxes labeled “TAYLOR FARMS BROCCOLI CRUNCH WITH BACON AND DRESSING ” with the case code 310151, produced on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22, 2013.
  • 12.13-lb. boxes labeled “TAYLOR FARMS BROCCOLI CRUNCH WITH BACON AND DRESSING ” with the case code 310153, produced Oct. 21 through Oct. 23, 2013.
