What did you think of Cyrus' performance?
During an interview with Oprah Winfrey, “Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke talked about the controversy drummed about by co-star Miley Cyrus’ performance at the VMAs. He also discussed the topic of twerking.
Here’s what Thicke said:
“People ask me if I twerk, and I’m like, Listen, I’m the twerkee. I don’t twerk.”
When asked by Oprah if he thought the performance was too sexual, he said:
“Well, I was onstage, I didn’t see it.”
Although Cyrus’ performance was slammed by many as too sexual, Thicke said he was just focused on giving a great performance.
“So to me, I’m walking out toward Miley, I’m not thinking sex, I’m thinking fun…I’m singing my butt off. I’m singing and I’m looking at the sky and I’m singing and I’m not really paying attention to all that. That’s on her.”
Unfortunately, not everyone in Thick and Cyrus’ group of back-up of performers was having fun.
Hollis Jane, one of the dancers in a bear outfit, wrote in her blog that the performance was “degrading.”
“I had never been in a performance where I was purely meant to be gawked or laughed at. I will never forget that performance because it is what forced me to draw my personal line in the sand,” she wrote. “For the first time I felt truly ashamed of being a little person. We were being used simply because we were little. It felt like society still saw us as a joke, despite the fact there is literally nothing different about me other than the fact I am small.”
