Do you believe Thicke?
Speaking with Oprah Winfrey, Robin Thicke weighed in on the controversy surrounding pop star Miley Cyrus’ performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
“People ask me if I twerk, and I’m like, Listen, I’m the twerkee. I don’t twerk,” Thicke said when Oprah asked him about the “sexual” nature of the peformance. “Well, I was onstage, I didn’t see it.”
“So to me, I’m walking out toward Miley, I’m not thinking sex, I’m thinking fun…I’m singing my butt off,” Thicke said. “I’m singing and I’m looking at the sky and I’m singing and I’m not really paying attention to all that. That’s on her.”
While Thicke may not be embarrassed by the performance, one of Cyrus’ back up dancers recently wrote that the performance was “one of the most degrading things I felt like I could ever do.”
Hollis Jane was one of several performers who danced in a bear outfit to Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop.”
“I had never been in a performance where I was purely meant to be gawked or laughed at. I will never forget that performance because it is what forced me to draw my personal line in the sand,” she wrote on her blog.
“For the first time I felt truly ashamed of being a little person. We were being used simply because we were little. It felt like society still saw us as a joke, despite the fact there is literally nothing different about me other than the fact I am small,” she added.
Do you believe Thicke? What did you think of the performance? Was it too sexual or perfectly normal for the VMAs? Was he really thinking about something other than sex when he was performing with Cyrus at MTV’s awards show? Is Cyrus just trying to copy Madonna and Lady Gaga or has she found her own niche?
