“We only get fifteen minutes up here,” McCartney said during the show.
Although the nation’s national parks are closed because of the government shutdown, New York City’s Times Square is partying thanks to a surprise mini-concert from non other than Beatles legend Paul McCartney.
E! Online reports that McCartney and his band journeyed to Times Square in yellow cabs and played a mini-set that surprised tourists milling about the famous landmark.
McCartney reportedly kept his performance a complete secret until he tweeted shortly before the concert: “Wow! Really excited to be playing New York Times Square at 1pm this afternoon!”
The performance may have only lasted 15 minutes, but neither the crowd nor the former Beatles member seemed to mind.
“You’re a lovely audience,” McCartney told the crowd, according to E! Online. “Let’s do this same time tomorrow. Just kidding.”
Entertainment weekly reports that the crowd asked at one point during McCartney’s mini-set whether he was going to play any Beatles tunes.
“We only get fifteen minutes up here,” McCartney said, adding, “Andy Warhol predicted that I would only get fifteen minutes of fame.”
This wasn’t the first surprise mini-concert McCartney gave in the New York City area last week. Rolling Stone reports that McCartney performed songs from his “New” album at a performing arts high school in Astoria, Queens, on Wednesday afternoon.
McCartney reportedly played for 400 students at the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts. He and his band performed 13 songs, including three songs from “New.” According to the set list published by the website, McCartney also performed several classics, including “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and “Band on the Run.”
Rolling Stone notes that the show marked what would have been John Lennon’s 73rd birthday.
