SanDisk announces new ‘world’s fastest memory card’

The card can read speeds of up to 450 megabytes per second and write speeds of up to 350MB/s.

Technology company SanDisk is ready to raise the bar on memory cards. According to a recent report from Tech 2, SanDisk started off Monday by announcing a new Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 memory card, a device the company claims will be the “world’s fastest memory card,” at least for a little while.

SanDisk’s new card certainly has the specifications to back up that bold claim. The card can read speeds of up to 450 megabytes per second and write speeds of up to 350MB/s. For a card with the capacity to hold up to 60GB or 120GB, that’s not too shabby, as the card seems designed for high-capacity data transfers. Users will be able to transfer 100 gigabytes of data in only four minutes with the Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 memory card – a huge boost over the 20 minute wait that exists for such data chunks with most modern memory cards.

According to SanDisk, the new Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 memory card is aimed at professionals who routinely transfer substantial blocks of data back and forth between computer and memory card. The target industries of the card include broadcast communications, cinematography, and digital photography. Music production professionals may also find a use for the next-generation memory card, while anyone who deals with a preponderance of data in their everyday lives will likely find reason to purchase the card as well.

To add to the appeal of the Extreme Pro CFast 2.0, SanDisk has said that the new memory cards are built with a rugged and durable design that will stand up to any and all types of abuse. The Extreme Pro CFast memory card is temperature, shock, and vibration resistant, with a pinless design that will greatly diminish the danger of damaging the device.

The CFast 2.0 specification is the source behind the card’s rapid speeds, and was developed by the CompactFlash Association. In the future, the specification will appear on memory cards from SanDisk’s competitors – such as Canon, Arri, and Codex – but for now, the Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 is alone at the top of the market. Each memory card will also come with a unique serial number to be registered to SanDisk Pro Care Customer Support.

Not to be outdone, Arri – a company which manufactures motion picture equipment – will adapt the CFast 2.0 technology for use in camera recording. The company’s latest camera, the Arri Amira, will have numerous CFast 2.0 memory cards on board to facilitate the same rapid data transfer speeds as are displayed by the SanDisk Extreme Pro CFast memory card.
