United Airlines says it will honor $0 tickets after online mistake

The airline confirmed its decision via Twitter on Friday.

If you were searching for airlines tickets on Thursday afternoon and your airline of choice was United Airlines, you may have paid as little as $0 for a domestic flight. Despite the loss of revenue, United Airlines has decided to honor the unbelievably cheap airline tickets, Bloomberg reports.

“United has reviewed the error that occurred yesterday and decided that, based on these specific circumstances, we will honor the tickets,” Mary Clark, a spokeswoman for United Airlines, told Bloomberg in an email.

The airline confirmed its decision via Twitter on Friday.

“We’ve reviewed the error that occurred yesterday and based on these specific circumstances, we will honor the tickets,” United Airlines tweeted.

According to the New York Daily News, the company was not willing to tell The Associated Press exactly how many cheap tickets it sold on Thursday or how much money they lost because of the error.

The Daily News cites the story of a mom who wanted to fly her son and his wife back home for a few days before he deployed. She found $10 tickets from Los Angeles to Milwaukee.

“Thinking there was NO way it was real, I went through the reservation process figuring I’d only be out $20 if it fell through,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “I am one HAPPY Marine Mom!”

The Chicago Tribune reports that the error arouse when a group of airline fares were being filed, not from any computer glitch.

Were you lucky enough to purchase a cheap ticket from United Airlines on Thursday? Did United Airlines do the right thing by honoring the $0 airline tickets or would it have been perfectly acceptable for them to have voided those ticket purchases?
